The Troop has a year-round adventure-based program to have fun and work towards advancement in the scouting program. In addition to camping, Scouts enjoy activities such as rock-climbing, boating, target-shooting and more.
Outdoor Activities
We try plan at least one outdoor activity each month, which is announced at the weekly meeting or via email. Favorites include:
Durland Fishing Trip – fall
We normally start the Scouting year with a leisurely trip to Durland (Clear Lake) Scout Reservation to camp and fish. This is a great trip as fall has some of the best camping weather.
Dan Rile Trek – fall
The District’s fall event usually has a theme and involves 10-15 other troops from the Mohican District. This two-night camping trip starts on Friday evening and ends mid-morning on Sunday.
Klondike Derby – winter
A sled journey where the Scouts provide the horsepower recreating the feel of dog sleds in the Klondike. They compete with Patrols from across the District, demonstrating Scout Skills followed by exciting sled races.
Freeze-O-Ree – winter
After the Klondike Derby we camp at Durland Scout Reservation in for one night. It’s a great introduction to the unique requirements of cold weather camping.
District Camp-O-Ree – spring
A two night camping trip. Stations include archery, the climbing tower and a tug-o-war championship.
Camp Read – summer
Six days and nights of swimming, boating, nature skills, shooting, caving, horse-back riding, climbing and much more. All Scouts are encouraged to attend programs to help them earn merit badges. New Scouts have the opportunity to bond with the Troop and find out what Scouting is all about.
Various camp outs – year-round
Whether it’s Ward Pound Ridge, Lake Tioratti or the Appalachian Trail Treks, the Troop’s Junior Leadership together with adult leadership guidance plans for exciting trips.

Camping Equipment
The Troop maintains a good supply of camping equipment. We have sufficient tents, lanterns, stoves, water jugs, etc, for all our Scouts and the Adult Leaders. All scouts tent with other scouts in Troop-supplied tents. Individual Scouts are responsible for their own personal gear – sleeping bag, backpack, mess kit, flashlight and change of clothes. Please allow your scout to pack his own back-pack for overnight trips with your oversight and guidance.
Fundraising
The Troop raises enough money to support most of our activities and supply the necessary camping equipment. We also subsidize the cost of summer camp so that all Scouts can have the opportunity to attend. Our Troop participates in two fundraisers during the year:
- Popcorn Sales – September and October
- Holiday Wreath Sales – Thanksgiving to mid December.
Over the weekends, Scouts together with a parent spend a few hours selling wreaths at Thornwood Town Center. Scouts are also given 8 wreaths to sell to family, friends and neighbors in order to be eligible for the summer camp stipend.
Safety
Safety is of primary importance at Scouting functions. Scouts are expected to heed their own safety at all times and ensure their actions do not create an unsafe environment for others. Nevertheless, Scouting is an outdoor activity, with opportunities for minor or even serious injuries to occur. If you or your son has a particular concern about any activity, please discuss it with the Troop Leadership.
